Book Review of Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!

A Cozy Read-Aloud: Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!

There is something undeniably magical about snuggling up with my little ones for bedtime stories, even after a long day filled with chaos. Just the other night, as we finally settled into our cozy reading nook, I grabbed Mo Willems’ classic, Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! This book has been on my radar for ages, and after falling in love with Willems’ Knuffle Bunny series, I was excited to dive into this hilarious tale with my kids.

Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! is delightful in its simplicity—yet rich in charm. The plot kicks off when a bus driver informs the audience (that’s you!) that he needs to step away but adds a hearty warning: “DON’T LET THE PIGEON DRIVE THE BUS!” As soon as he leaves, the Pigeon arrives, pestering the audience with increasingly funny and dramatic pleas to take the wheel.

Both my kids immediately connected with the Pigeon’s antics. From his wide-eyed excitement to his hilarious tantrums, they couldn’t help but giggle and shout “No!” back at the page. The illustrations, with their vibrant yet minimalistic style, spotlight the Pigeon’s myriad expressions—Mo Willems captures a whole range of emotions with just a few strokes. That blue Pigeon and the bus driver are the only characters in the book, yet they bring so much life to the story.

Willems’ writing is simple but brimming with wit. I was charmed by the snappy dialogue, especially lines like “Pigeon at the Wheel!” and “No? I never get to do anything!” The way the Pigeon cheekily interacts with the reader made my kids feel like they were a part of the action. My daughter, who is four, was utterly drawn in, reacting with faux gasps and dramatic gestures, while my three-year-old son giggled uncontrollably. There’s nothing quite like hearing their delightful laughter filling the room as they played along with the story.

One of the most surprising moments came towards the end when the bus driver returns. My son, who often misses the details in stories, shouted “He’s back!”—and I realized that he had been genuinely engaged the whole time. We cheered when the Pigeon didn’t get the chance to drive, and it melted my heart to share in that little victory.

In terms of recommendations, I wholeheartedly suggest Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! for little ones aged three and up. It’s perfect for those who appreciate witty humor and interactive storytelling. Whether you’re looking for a book to fill a quiet moment or a fun read to ignite your child’s imagination, this story does it all.

This one isn’t just a passing read in our house; it’s a new family favorite. Every time we pick it up, it transports us back to that cozy reading nook, filled with laughter and cheer. There’s a comfort in knowing that amidst the little challenges of raising young children, we can always find joy in the pages of a book. So, give it a try! You might just find yourself chatting with a Pigeon who yearns for adventure.
