Little Cat: A Purr-fect Halloween Read

As the leaves begin to turn and the scent of pumpkin spice fills the air, there’s something magical about cuddling up with my kids to share a sweet story. We recently discovered Little Cat from Silver Dolphin Books—a charming shaped board book that’s quickly become a staple in our bedtime routine, especially as we ease into the Halloween season.

Cozying up on the couch with my two little ones, ages 3 and just shy of 2, I felt a wave of nostalgia wash over me as they excitedly tugged at the cover, their little hands barely able to wrap around it. Written with delightful rhyming text, Little Cat invites readers into the whimsical world of, you guessed it, Little Cat. She’s on a mission to practice her sneaking skills on a dark Halloween night, and it’s a pleasure to follow her as she slinks around corners and peeks out of pumpkins.

The illustrations are beautifully engaging, with bright colors and soft flocking that instantly caught my toddlers’ eyes. I could see their excitement grow as they pointed out every little detail on the pages. My eldest was particularly enchanted by the pumpkins—she giggled every time Little Cat peeped out from behind one, as if she were playing a game of hide-and-seek with her! It’s this kind of interaction that makes reading so enriching; they were not just passive listeners but little participants in the adventure.

As I read aloud, the rhythm of the words flowed so naturally, allowing us to lean in closer to the pages. This book sparked a delightful conversation about Halloween and all things “spooky”—a perfect segue for my curious little minds who were eager to gather some candy and costumes soon. The humor was palpable, especially when my youngest burst into giggles as Little Cat tried to be sneaky but couldn’t help but bump into things. Books that evoke laughter are gold in our home!

One of our favorite lines recounted Little Cat’s attempts at sneaking. My daughter loves to imitate the sneaky "slinking" sound, making us all laugh, and it was a bonding moment I’ll cherish. There’s something about a good book that brings out their joyful, silly sides, and Little Cat is a fantastic catalyst for that.

I wholeheartedly recommend Little Cat for little ones aged baby to 2 years. It’s a favorite for Halloween, but its charm could captivate all year round. It’s especially perfect for parents wanting to weave in a bit of the spooky spirit in a light-hearted way. This is definitely not just a one-time read for us; it’s become a cherished part of our family library, one that I suspect we’ll reach for every fall.
