Embracing the Monster: A Review of How to Catch a Monster

As I curled up on the couch with my little ninjas last night, ready for our much-anticipated bedtime routine, I realized how many tales we’ve shared about monsters. But this time, the story was different, and I couldn’t have picked a better book than How to Catch a Monster: A Halloween Picture Book for Kids About Conquering Fears! by Adam Wallace.

You see, not a night goes by without one of my kids (usually the youngest) peeking into the closet and eyeing it suspiciously. “What if a monster is hiding in there?” she’d ask, her eyes wide and curious. Enter this delightful picture book, which not only answers that fear but turns it into a hilarious adventure where our protagonist – a brave little ninja – sets off to tackle that very monster. This book beautifully captures themes of courage, friendship, and the discovery that things aren’t always as scary as they seem.

From the moment we opened the pages, my three-year-old was captivated. The illustrations are vibrant and playful, teeming with colorful details that had both my children pointing and giggling. The playful rhymes had a delightful rhythm that made it easy to read aloud; I could feel them leaning in closer with each stanza. “What if the monster has clawsssss?” my son whispered, his curiosity piqued. It was moments like these – where their imaginations took flight – that made our reading time feel all the more special.

One of our favorite lines that had us in stitches was when the ninja confidently exclaims he’ll scare the monster away. But much to our surprise (and delight), the monster turns out to be quite friendly! My kids loved the clever twist on their fears, giggling as they realized the ninja just might end up making a new friend instead. There’s something so sweet and reassuring about the narrative; it sparked a delightful discussion between us about our fears and how facing them can lead to wonderful surprises.

If I had to encapsulate the reading experience, I’d say this book is a warm hug in narrative form. It reaffirms that facing what scares us can lead to friendship, laughter, and ultimately help conquer those fears. After all, a monster in the closet might just need a friend too!

I wholeheartedly recommend How to Catch a Monster for children aged 3-5, especially those who may shy away at bedtime or have concerns about what lurks in the dark. Whether it’s for a Halloween read or just a cozy bedtime story, this book could become a treasured part of your family library—one that opens doors to conversations about fears and encourages creative storytelling.
