A Splash of Joy: Reviewing One Fish, Two Fish, Three, Four, Five Fish

As I settled into the cozy nook of our living room with my two little ones, I couldn’t help but reflect on how bedtime reading often feels like a sweet challenge. Some nights, it’s a race to get through the story before squirmy butt wiggles turn into full-on chaos. But last week, I stumbled upon One Fish, Two Fish, Three, Four, Five Fish from the Dr. Seuss Nursery Collection—and oh, what an adventure it turned out to be!

Inspired by the beloved One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, this adapted board book is an absolute delight for babies and toddlers alike. It incorporates five vibrant, fish-shaped beads at the top, making counting a fun, hands-on experience for my little ones. Both my three-year-old, Ellie, and my one-and-a-half-year-old, Jack, were mesmerized as they eagerly moved the colorful beads back and forth, counting along with the rhythmic, delightful verses.

The book introduces a whimsical cast of characters—some we recognized from the original, and some fresh faces that had Ellie giggling and Jack pointing with sheer curiosity. From silly fish to furry ones, Dr. Seuss captures the essence of individuality, which sparked conversations about how everyone is unique. “Mom, where’s the purple fish?” Ellie asked, her little finger tracing over the plump shapes of the pages. Moments like this turn reading from mere entertainment into meaningful exchanges, and it warmed my heart to witness their curiosity unfold.

Illustratively, the book bursts with color and energy, just as one would expect from Dr. Seuss. The illustrations stand out against the bold text, combining simplicity with laughter-inducing detail. It’s impossible not to get swept up in the rhythm of the lines, which made Jack squeal with delight every time we reached a funny character. Ellie often chimed in, “Again, again!” which truly made me feel like we were sharing a treasure rather than just flipping through pages.

One of our favorite lines, “From there to here, and here to there, funny things are everywhere!” became our mantra as we read. It resonated with Ellie especially, who soon found herself inventing her own delightful verses about our pet goldfish. The enthusiastic reactions from both of them—the giggles, the pointing, the delight in discovering each character—made this book an instant hit in our home.

I would enthusiastically recommend One Fish, Two Fish, Three, Four, Five Fish for families with young readers, especially kids aged 1 to 4, who are ready to engage with counting and colorful characters. This book is not just a one-time read. It’s become a staple in our bedtime routine, a heartwarming way to wind down while fostering a love for reading.
