A Hoppy Review: Here Comes T. Rex Cottontail
As a busy mom, I cherish those stolen moments when my kids are distracted by the pages of a picture book. Recently, after a long day of toys scattered across our living room and a dinner that turned into more of a wrestling match than a meal, I decided to unwind with the delightful Here Comes T. Rex Cottontail by Lois Grambling. The cover, with a silly T. Rex dressed as the Easter Bunny, immediately captured my kids’ attention and set the stage for laughter and giggles before bedtime.
The premise is as imaginative as it gets: Peter Cottontail is under the weather, and who else but T. Rex—our big, lovable, goofy dinosaur—is called to step in for the Easter Bunny. But here’s the catch: he has to learn to hop without breaking all the eggs! My own little ones, aged 4 and 6, were hooked from the very first page. Their eyes sparkled with excitement as T. Rex attempted to master the art of hopping, complete with flailing arms and hilarious spills.
The illustrations by Jack E. Davis are whimsically exaggerated. Each page is filled with colorful characters and clever scenarios—perfect for keeping little minds spinning. My son, a total dinosaur aficionado, kept pointing out the various dino friends who join in the chaotic egg-delivering adventure. Between the art and the engaging plot, we had a lively conversation about what kind of eggs T. Rex might be carrying and whether he could truly pull off the Easter Bunny look!
One of the sweetest moments came when my daughter gasped at a particularly funny page where T. Rex nearly squished an entire pile of eggs. “Mommy, will the chicks be okay?” she asked with big, concerned eyes. I couldn’t help but chuckle at her worry, which sparked a whole discussion about how eggs hatch. It created a bridge to talk about animals and springtime, making this book not just entertaining but educational too!
A favorite line that made us all laugh was when T. Rex promised he wouldn’t wiggle while hopping but, of course, that’s exactly what he did—over and over again!
Here Comes T. Rex Cottontail has quickly become a cherished read in our home. Its blend of humor, creativity, and a twist on the traditional Easter tale makes it a gem for both dinosaur lovers and families looking to celebrate spring in an enchanting way. I’d highly recommend this book for children aged 4 to 8, especially if they’re into dinosaurs or just appreciate a good dose of silliness.
In an age where we sometimes veer into very serious themes, it’s refreshing to encounter a light-hearted story that captures the joy of friendship and teamwork. This book will undoubtedly carve out a permanent spot on our nightly reading roster, and I’ve found myself sneaking in extra readings when my kids are busy playing or independently reading. It’s definitely a family favorite that I hope inspires many joyful Easter mornings filled with laughter and love!
