Froggy’s Halloween Adventure: A Spooktacular Review!

A Delightful Dive into Froggy’s Halloween

As the leaves began to crunch beneath our feet and the air turned crisp, my little ones started buzzing with excitement for Halloween. This year, as we snuggled up on the couch for our nightly reading, I reached for Froggy’s Halloween by Jonathan London. After a long day of kid chaos, I craved a cozy moment—one where we could laugh, snuggle, and dive into a little bit of magic.

In Froggy’s Halloween, we follow our clumsy little hero, Froggy, on his quest to find the perfect Halloween costume. True to form, Froggy stumbles through a series of misadventures that never seem to go quite right. Whether he’s slipping on his costume, confusing his friends during trick-or-treating, or getting hilariously tangled in his own enthusiasm, Froggy’s heart shines through all the chaos. It’s a sweet reminder that even when things don’t go according to plan, it’s the joy of the experience that truly matters.

My kids, ages four and six, were utterly captivated from the very first page. They giggled at Froggy’s blunders and cheered him on as he faced each new mishap. It sparked a delightful conversation about what they planned to be for Halloween, and I absolutely adored the way they began to imagine their own silly scenarios. My four-year-old was particularly taken with Froggy’s mishap of trying to get into a costume that was two sizes too big—“Look, Mommy! He looks just like a big balloon!” she exclaimed, bursting into laughter.

The illustrations by Frank Remkiewicz are a feast for the eyes, bursting with color and whimsy. Each image sparkles with festive Halloween details, from playful pumpkins to fluttering bats, making it so enjoyable to turn the pages together. The vibrant colors and Froggy’s expressive features drew my kids in, which kept them glued to the story as I read aloud. It was such a treat to share those giggles with them, accompanied by their squeals of joy when Froggy finally joins his friends for trick-or-treating.

One of our favorite lines was when Froggy says, “Nothing is scarier than a frog who can’t find his friends!” It perfectly encapsulates the spirit of childhood—a mixture of whimsy and worry, especially during Halloween. It also led to a fun discussion about what did scare them and how we could help Froggy find his friends in our own Halloween adventures.

I’d recommend Froggy’s Halloween for children aged 3-7—especially for those little ones who might be a tad timid about the Halloween festivities. It’s light-hearted, sweet, and oh-so relatable. Plus, it offers that much-needed reassurance that Halloween is a time to celebrate friendship, laughter, and the joy of being yourself, blunders and all.
