Exploring Bedtime with “Sleepy Sheepy”: The Joys and Oopsies of Bedtime Reading

As the chaos of the day fades away and the cozy glow of bedtime settles in, there’s always that moment where I find myself feeling just a tad on edge. My kids, as delightful as they are, often treat bedtime like it’s an Olympic sport, complete with bonus points for negotiation. So, when I stumbled upon Sleepy Sheepy by Lucy Ruth Cummins, illustrated by Pete Oswald, it felt like the universe was sending me a little help.

In Sleepy Sheepy, we’re introduced to a fluffy character named Sleepy Sheepy, who is hilariously and defiantly NOT sleepy. As the clock ticks away, Ma and Pa Sheepy try to coax him into bed while he opts for building blocks and knitting socks instead—classic bedtime distractions, am I right? My kids giggled as they recognized their own bedtime antics mirrored in Sleepy Sheepy’s mischievous refusal to settle down. “He’s just like us, Mommy!” they exclaimed, wide-eyed and leaning in closer.

The playful rhymes, complemented by Oswald’s dreamy illustrations, drew my little ones in from the very first page. I watched them lean in, captivated by the fluffy textures and soft colors that held their attention. My three-year-old even pointed out the blocks Sleepy Sheepy was building! We had an impromptu discussion about what they would build if they could stay up just a little longer. It turned what could have been a simple read into a shared moment of creativity and laughter.

One of our favorite lines, “He was wired. And absolutely not tired!” became an instant catchphrase around our house. My kids recited it with exaggerated animation, and I found myself laughing uncontrollably every time they did. In the midst of bedtime struggles, it was a sweet reminder that we’re not alone in this journey. It wasn’t just a story; it became a part of our nightly routine.

Now, I can’t overlook how Sleepy Sheepy has become a family favorite. I’ve even caught my eldest, at just five years old, "reading" it to her stuffed animals during the day. It’s our go-to book for those nights when bedtime feels like a battle, and it serves as a gentle reminder that pretending to be busy can sometimes be more fun than sleeping.

I wholeheartedly recommend Sleepy Sheepy for children aged 2 to 6, especially those who resist sleep like my little ones. It’s perfect for parents looking for a lighthearted bedtime tale that can spark conversations and smiles. This book isn’t just a one-time read; it’s made its cozy corner in our family library—definitely a keeper!
