Never Touch a Dinosaur! — A Roaring Good Time

As a mom of three, I’ve learned that bedtime stories can either be a relaxing end to the day or a chaotic circus act. The other evening, in an attempt to stave off the usual “just one more book” pleas, I stumbled across Never Touch a Dinosaur! by Rosie Greening. Honestly, I was intrigued—could we make it through the tale without a dinosaur-related meltdown? Spoiler alert: we did, and it turned out to be an unforgettable adventure!

In Never Touch a Dinosaur!, we are whisked away into a land filled with brightly colored dinosaurs and engaging rhymes that playfully warn us to stay clear of these prehistoric creatures. But, of course, the book’s charm lies in the irresistible urge to touch them! My kids immediately loved the funny premise, and as we dove into the book, I found them giggling at the very idea of ignoring such sage advice.

The book follows a delightful format of interactive touch-and-feel elements, featuring different textures on each page. There’s a spiky spine, smooth scales, and even a fuzzy tail to explore. My two-year-old, who is still very much in the “explore everything by touch” phase, couldn’t get enough of stroking the silicone textures. I’m often amazed at how these sensory experiences can captivate my little ones. Each textured element seemed to spark conversations—my daughter asked, “Do dinosaurs really feel like this?” and my son chimed in with some surprisingly detailed (if not slightly fictional) dinosaur facts!

The illustrations are another highlight—each page bursts with vibrant colors and charming dinosaurs, blending humor and whimsy perfectly. I found myself laughing as much as the kids did, especially at the mischievous little characters peeking around each corner. One favorite line that had us all in stitches was when the book warned, “They might give you a roar!” – followed by a playful illustration of a dino with a cheeky grin. My kids couldn’t stop cracking up, and soon enough, they were roaring at each other, much to my delight.

As a parent, I appreciate books that both entertain and engage. This one certainly kept their attention from start to finish, and I loved the moments of dialogue weaving through our reading, turning a simple story into a mini interactive experience. We even had a little discussion about what other animals might be just as fun (or dangerous) to touch, which allowed us to go on a delightful tangent about their favorite creatures.
