Curious George Learns to Count from 1 to 100 Review: A Counting Adventure in My Chaos

As a busy mom, I often find myself navigating the beautiful yet chaotic world of parenting young children. Between snack time negotiations and toy rescues, finding quiet moments can sometimes be a challenge. That’s why I was excited to discover Curious George Learns to Count from 1 to 100 by H.A. Rey and Margret Rey. Not only is Curious George a beloved character in our household, but counting seems to be a skill my kids (ages 3 and 5) are all too curious about right now.

This delightful book strikes a perfect mix of fun and learning, taking little readers on an adventure as George celebrates his town’s 100th birthday. From counting toys and clouds to shoes and pancakes, George finds endless opportunities to introduce numbers as he scampers about his day with the Man with the Yellow Hat. It’s packed with familiar objects that made both my kiddos excited to engage and shout out the numbers together.

The colorful illustrations kept my children captivated right from the start. Each page bursts with vibrancy, showcasing items they typically see in their own lives, which made them feel connected to the material. My son pointed at the page featuring ten colorful crayons and declared, “Look, just like mine!” as my daughter excitedly counted along with enthusiasm. It’s moments like this that make reading a shared experience so rewarding—my heart felt full just watching them bond over the simple act of counting.

In true Curious George fashion, mischief is sprinkled throughout the story, sparking giggles and smiles. I can’t tell you how many times my kids burst into fits of laughter when George got a little too carried away with his counting! One page, which featured 23 napkins, had my daughter cackling as she tried to count, giggling at the prospect of George’s playful antics scattering them everywhere.

What I love most about this book is its flexible read-aloud appeal. It invites exploration; we might start counting all the cupcakes on one page and end up deep in a conversation about our favorite birthday treats by the next. It’s a fantastic opportunity for interactive learning—sometimes I read it cover to cover, and other times we skip around, pausing to count items together. Each visit to the book reveals something new, either in the visuals or in my kids’ excitement.

I can wholeheartedly recommend Curious George Learns to Count from 1 to 100 for families with kids aged 2-5, especially those who are gearing up for preschool or kindergarten. The story makes it a fun addition to any reading list for those little learners who might be ready to tackle numbers, while also keeping them entertained. Not only did it teach counting, but it encouraged curiosity—something every parent (and every little monkey!) can appreciate.

In the end, this book has become more than just a one-time read; it’s a new family favorite that has nestled its way into our nightly reading routine. Sometimes, I catch my kids quietly flipping through the pages, revisiting George’s adventures on their own. For me, it’s a comforting reminder that even in the chaos of parenting, there are small moments of joy to cherish, especially when we’re counting them together.
