Finding Laughter with Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type

Just the other night, as I snuggled up with my two young kids for bedtime, we found ourselves in one of those delightful standoffs between story preference. My oldest wanted a superhero adventure, while my youngest was firm about needing “a silly book!” After a bit of back-and-forth, I grabbed Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin, knowing it would capture the hearts—and giggles—of both my little ones.

From the cover featuring those quirky cows typing away, I knew we were in for a treat. The story follows a bunch of barnyard animals, led by Farmer Brown’s clever cows, who discover a typewriter and decide to negotiate for better living conditions. It’s a tale of cleverness, communication, and the unexpected power of teamwork. My kiddos were instantly hooked as we met characters like the determined ducks who join forces with the cows—both of whom are just asking for electric blankets!

As I read aloud, I couldn’t help but notice how engaged my kids were with the story. The conversational tone and rhythmic flow made it easy to bring each character to life. My youngest, who is generally a bit squirmy, actually settled in and chimed in with giggles at the part where the cows demand “better conditions.” We all erupted in laughter together. It sparked conversations about what we would negotiate for ourselves, from chocolate chip cookies to extra bedtime stories—real negotiations for tiny humans!

The illustrations by Betsy Lewin are delightful and beautifully complement the story. Each page is bursting with vibrant colors and charming expressions that kept my children’s eyes glued to the book. They particularly loved the images of the cows at their typewriter, their big brown eyes conveying a mixture of earnestness and mischief. I could see the wheels turning in my kids’ heads as they whispered their own interpretations of what the cows might be typing!

One memorable moment was when my oldest burst out, “Can we get a typewriter, Mommy? I want to write silly letters too!” It was pure joy mixed with a sprinkle of surprise—who knew a book about typing cows could inspire a budding writer? We even took a moment to imagine what other farm animals might type if they had the chance. Would the chickens send letters to their friends? And what about the pigs?

Each reading feels fresh, and it serves as a gentle reminder of the importance of communication, humor, and perhaps the power to negotiate—even if it’s just for an extra cookie before dinner.

Overall, what truly warms my heart about this book is how it brings my family together. In the chaotic whirlwind of parenting, finding those little pockets of laughter and connection, all thanks to a bunch of typing cows, is a treasure. What a joy it is to see my kids laughing and learning together, one story at a time!
