I’m thrilled to finally share what I’ve been working on for the past three years. The Tide Between Us will be published by Penguin Press in the autumn, and it’s the most personal book I’ve written.
The novel follows two sisters in a small Hebridean community in the 1980s, as the arrival of a mysterious stranger forces them to confront a family secret that has shaped their lives in ways they never understood.
This book grew from a conversation I had with my own mother, years ago, about the things families choose not to say — the silences that become so familiar they start to feel like walls. I wanted to write about what happens when those walls finally come down.
