A Colorful Adventure: My Review of My First Book of Colours

As a mom, I often find myself searching for that perfect book to wind down with my little ones at the end of the day—especially during those chaotic bedtime moments when everyone is a bit too hyper. Recently, I stumbled upon My First Book of Colours by Wonder House Books, and I must say, it has quickly become one of our cherished evening rituals.

This delightful little board book is designed for our tiniest explorers, focusing on colors with well-researched, vibrant illustrations that leave a lasting impression. With only 22 pages, it invites babies and toddlers to sift through the rainbow and discover the world around them. I loved that we could sit on the couch together, my toddler perched on my lap, as we flipped through the thick pages. They’re sturdy enough for little hands to grab without fear of tearing them, which means no unintentional panic when a curious mind goes on the attack!

The vivid colors and relatable images really stood out to my kids. My son pointed excitedly at the bright yellow sun while my daughter giggled at the silly, fluffy animals. "Look, Mommy!" they would exclaim, often labeling the colors back to me, which made my heart soar. This mix of engagement and learning felt magical—as if we were sharing a quiet adventure right there on our couch.

Illustrations play such a crucial role in captivating little hearts, don’t they? With each turn of the page, the colorful artwork seemed to leap off the board, igniting conversations about everything from our own pet cat (the book featured a cute one!) to the vibrant foods we eat. I even found myself reflecting on colors in our day-to-day life more; it turned our dinners into mini art lessons. “What color is your carrot?” I would ask during lunchtime; the conversations just flowed seamlessly.

And let’s talk about some of the giggles! One night, we found ourselves cracking up at the image of a coal piece for the color black. “That’s silly!” my son said, laughing. It made such an impression that now anytime he sees something black, he points and declares, “Coal!”—much to the amusement of his friends at the playground.

In terms of practicality, this book scores major points. It’s the perfect size to stash in a diaper bag for on-the-go learning, fitting nicely between snacks and tiny toys. I love pulling it out during family dinners or while we wait at the doctor’s office. Not only is it a great time-filler, but it also sparks interest and conversation.

Who Would Love This?

I wholeheartedly recommend My First Book of Colours for parents with babies and toddlers up to about three years old—those little hands ready to discover the world! If your child enjoys engaging with beautiful visuals and learning through play, this book is an absolute win. Who knows? It might just become your go-to for both learning and giggles, just as it has for our family.

As a mom, nothing feels quite as rewarding as watching your child’s eyes light up at the simplest of things. This book does just that—sparking joy, conversation, and the magic of colors in our everyday life. Happy reading, friends!
